“Umm, I’m not sure, he won't tell me.”
“Miego, you’re so damn extra,” Yanna said and looked over her shoulder at her brother.
“Mind your damn business, Yanna.”
“Watch your mouth around this baby, Miego,” Ginette said, frowning at her son. “Hey sweetheart, is it okay if you stay here with me for a little while?”
Ray looked up at Miego and then across the room at her mother. Yami nodded to let her know that it was okay, and Ray displayed a soft smile and nodded at Miego’s mother. She took Ray from her son and then led her to the kitchen. They could hear her offering Ray some cookies that she had made just for her.
Miego joined Yami and stood behind her with his arms around her before he focused on his sister. “We shouldn't be gone long. Just call if you need anything.”
“Man, gone. We got this. You act like we don't know how to watch a kid.” Yanna rolled her eyes at her brother and then smiled at Yami. “She's good, you just take care of him.” Yanna nodded at her brother.
“Umm, okay.” Yami glanced at Miego and then back at Yanna, who laughed.
“Mind your business, Yanna. Ma, we’re gone.” He looked down at Yami. “You wanna go tell her bye?”
She nodded and he led her to go see Ray. After a few hugs and kisses, the two left and were back in the car heading downtown. They talked a little about his family and them keeping Ray on the drive, but mostly it was just idle chit chat about nothing important. After they reached the restaurant, which was an upscale rooftop place that Yami had never been to, and the two settled in for dinner.
“It's nice here,” Yami said, looking around. She felt a little out of place because most of the guys were dressed in what could be considered formal wear.
“You like it?” Miego asked, looking around as he lifted his beer and then turned it up.
“I do, but we don't fit.” She looked at him with a grin.
He chuckled. “Why, because we’re not dressed like it's prom night? Man, fuck that. I probably got more money than half the people up here, so we fit. That shit ain't me, and I don't think it's you either. But my money spends just like theirs, so don't sweat that shit.” He winked at Yami and she laughed.
“You just don't care, do you?” She offered up a grin that had him wanting to touch her, but she was across from him.
“Why should I? I’m just me. I don't need anybody to validate that for me, well anybody but you. If you’re cool with who I am, then fuck everybody else.”
“It's that simple, huh?”
“Shouldn't it be?”
She shrugged. “I guess so. Why me, though?”
“Why not you? You’re smart, you’re good to your daughter, and you’re sexy as fuck. What else is there?”
She laughed. “There’s a lot more.”
“Nah, not really. I know you're trying to figure shit out, but I also know you’re feeling me. I can see it when you look at me and when you’re around me, just like right now, you really wanna come sit on my lap.” An arrogant grin spread across his face while he waited for her to respond, which she did by laughing.
“The fuck you laughing for? You want me, Yami, and I want you. Only difference is, I’m not afraid to say that shit, but don't think just because you don't say it that I don't know.”
“I don't know anything about you, Miego.”
“You know enough, but regardless of what you don't know, what you can't deny is that you know you want more.”
“Maybe, but I still need to know you.”
“You know me, Yami. You know who I am, you know what I do. I’m just another street nigga who did whatever necessary to survive. Maybe it wasn't the best, and maybe I’ll never get away from that shit. I want to, but only time will tell. I take care of the people I love, and my heart is genuine. I’ll be good to you if you’re loyal to me. What else is there?”
“I don't know, it’s just not that simple.”
“It can be. Stop thinking about all the shit that can go wrong, and just focus on what can go right. I get that things are a little complicated for you, but let me worry about that. Ray is Black’s daughter, I get that, but you’re mine. If he’s confused about that, I damn sure don't have a problem clearing that up for him. Okay?”
Yami didn't know why, but she believed him. She trusted him when he said he had her, so she nodded and agreed. “Okay.”
*****
“Thank you for tonight.” Yami stood in Miego’s doorway where she found him sitting at the foot of his bed scrolling through his phone.
“Why are you standing there like you scared to come in here?”
“I’m not, it's your room. I’m just trying to respect your space,” Yami said with a grin before she stepped in and sat down beside him. She glanced at his phone, trying to see what he was doing, but he locked it and set it down beside him on the bed.
“You don't have to thank me for that. That wasn't shit.”
“It was to me.”
Her relationship with Black was not really a relationship. They hung out at his place, and that was about it. It wasn't like they didn't have fun together because they did, but he wasn't the type to step outside of his comfort zone, so they never really did much.
“You’ve been fucking with the wrong type of niggas then.” Miego looked over his shoulder at her and placed his hand on her leg. “Is Ray sleep?”
“Yeah, and she loves your mother. I think all the junk food she gave her sealed the deal, but she wanted to know when she could go back. She asked about my mom too.”
Miego knew Yami was just trying to feel him out about dealing with her mom, but honestly, he didn't care. As long as her mom wasn't on any petty shit, then he was cool with it. Yami was his responsibility now, so anybody that caused her problems was a problem to him. Even her mom.
“So take her to see your mom.”
“I might. I’m just not ready to hear how stupid I am for messing up my life.”
Miego watched the frown form on her face and it pissed him off. “Man, don't let that shit get to you. You’re in school, you’re taking care of Ray, and standing on your own. How the fuck is that messing up your life? Just because you’re doing shit your way don't mean it's the wrong way.”
“I know, she just makes it hard.”
“It's not about her, it's about you. Are you happy?”
“Yeah. For the first time in a long time,” Yami admitted.
“Then fuck it. Keep doing you.” He leaned into her shoulder with his.
“I also haven't let Ray see her father in a minute.”
Miego’s expression turned cold as he looked down at her. He had assumed, but didn't know for sure, so hearing her say it made his temple twitch because he knew what was coming. For the first few weeks after they moved in, Yami would hit him up with text or calls to let him know that she was dropping Ray off at her grandmother’s house to spend time with Black. But recently, that hadn't been happening, so he had no idea what was going on with that situation.
“You worried about that?”
“A little, if I have to actually see him. At first, he didn't care about seeing me as long as he could see Ray, but the last time I picked Ray up, his mom told me that she couldn't do it anymore. Black told her that I had to bring Ray to him, which means that it’s not about Ray, it's about him wanting to see me. I don't know how he’s going to act when I’m finally around him again, which is why I hadn't done anything about it.”
“I’ll be there, so it doesn't matter, if he wants you there then he wants me there too and that’s not up for debate. That’s his daughter and he deserves to see her, but I told you I got you, and I meant that shit. He will not ever put his hands on you again. I mean that, Yami.”
“I don't think that’s a good idea. It will only make things worse if you’re there.”
“What you think doesn’t really matter when it comes to me making sure you’re good. I don't have to say shit to him, but I’m not letting you go see him without me
there. That's not up for debate, and I really don't want to talk about that.” He stood and reached for her hand, and when she was on her feet, he lifted her body enough for Yami to wrap her legs around his waist.
Her small size made it easy for him to hold her in place and her arms moved around his neck. After a few pecks, Miego looked her right in the eyes.
“Stay in here tonight.”
“I can't do that,” she whispered against his lips just before he kissed her again, this time, a full blown kiss.
“Can't or won't?”
She was about to answer, but he kissed her again to stop her and then walked over to the door, carrying her with him. Once he shut it, he moved to the bed, lowered her onto it and stood over her just staring at her for a minute with a grin on his face.
“You wanna run, don't you?”
Yami laughed. “No… well maybe a little.”
Her response made him laugh. “How many times do I have to tell you I got you before you understand what that means?”
Miego pulled the drawstring on the sweat pants he was wearing and moved them and his boxers down his body. His manhood was ready and waiting, damn near drawing her in. Yami tried her best not to stare, but it was commanding attention and she couldn't help it.
After walking to his dresser and grabbing a hand full of condoms, Miego stood over her again. He tossed them on the nightstand and then climbed on the bed with Yami. He pulled her to a seated position, yanked her shirt over her head, and tossed it on the floor. Her eyes were on him the entire time, even as he reached for the cotton shorts she was wearing and moved them over her hips and down her thighs, along with her panties.
“You good?” Miego asked before he leaned over her and kissed her stomach and then trailed kisses up her chest to her neck.
She released a soft moan and nodded, unable to speak. When she didn't answer, he hovered over her and let his eyes meet hers.
“Yamiah, are you good?”
“Yes.”
Just the thought alone of being able to finally enter Yami had Miego on edge. He played around with the idea of tasting her first, but he had been waiting for what felt like forever to have her so he would have to owe her on that one. Right now, he needed to be inside her, so he balanced his weight on one arm and grabbed a condom.
Once he ripped it open and got it on, he moved closer to her and slid one arm under her back and used the other to spread her legs apart. He then used his hand to guide himself to her opening. After positioning himself, he slowly pushed inside her and damn near lost it right then and there.
He didn't know if it was the anticipation or just that she felt that right to him, but Miego knew right away that it would be a struggle to keep control.
“Fuck, shorty, you wrong as hell for holding out on me,” Miego said just before he buried his face in her neck.
He could feel the tension in her body, so he took it easy on her, with slow, steady strokes. It was damn near killing him because he just wanted to dive in and go deep.
When he snapped out of his euphoric state and her hands gripped his arms, he lifted his head and looked own at her. Her face was balled up and she had her lip tucked between her teeth, but her eyes were open and she looked right at him. He kissed her on the forehead and then her lips.
“You want me to stop, shorty? You look like you’re about to cry,” he said with a grin
“Shut up, I’m fine,” she lied.
Yami felt like he was about to rip her body apart, but she was not about to let him know that. Seeing wasn't believing because laying eyes on what he had inside her did no justice for what she was currently feeling.
Miego chuckled. “No the fuck you’re not, but give it a minute and you’ll be alright.” He kissed her again before she could say anything else, and then focused on keeping his promise.
Miego handled Yami like a pro, making sure he hit every inch that he could reach inside her body. She accepted it and took it like a champ. It only took a minute for the pain to subside, and then she was all in. She matched his strokes, and the two moved together like they had been practicing for it all their lives. Just as Yami reached her boiling point, Miego did too. With his lips pressed against her shoulder, he held her tight, damn near crushing her body because all of his weight was on her until his body went rigid and he released.
Unable to move, Miego stayed put until he felt her trying to shove him off her, which made him roll over onto his side and pull her with him.
“Man, I’m not fucking with you on that.” Miego laughed and kissed the tip of her nose.
She frowned, trying to figure out what he meant. “Why?”
“Cause, I told you, you’re wrong as hell for holding out on me.”
Yami laughed and sat up. “I don't even know what to say to that.”
“I don't know why the fuck you laughing. I’m dead ass.” Miego sat up and then stood.
He looked over his shoulder at her on the opposite side of the bed before he shook his head and walked to the bathroom. When he returned, Yami was dressed again and about to leave his room, but he quickly put a stop to that.
“Nah, it don't work like that. I told you that you were working your way to this room. This is our shit now.” He nodded to the bed as he stepped back into his boxers.
“I can't do that, what about Ray?”
“What about her, you don't have to explain shit to her, she’s two. But I’ll wake your ass up early so you can go back to your room if that’s what you want, but tonight you're in here with me.”
Yami looked at the door and then back at him.
“The fuck you standing there like you gotta think about it for? I’m not playing, and the way your ass standing over there, I know good and damn well you not gon’ make it down the hall to your room. Your face all scrunched up and shit from just standing there.” He smiled at her with a wicked grin, knowing that he had just rearranged her insides.
Yami was pissed that he was mocking her, but she really couldn't say anything. He was right. Any movement she made had her struggling, and she seriously wondered if she would be able to handle him, but she kept it to herself. She was not about to admit defeat with Miego. He was too arrogant for that.
“Fine, but we’ll have to figure something out.”
“Yeah, whatever,” Miego said with a grin after she purposely ignored what he said about her current physical status.
They both climbed in his bed, and with her body against his and his arms holding her in place, they settled in for the night. Yami didn't complain because it just felt right. She would have to figure out the rest later.
The next morning, just like planned, Miego woke her up early so that she could get Ray up and dressed. Yami had class at ten, and she was taking Ray to daycare. After she had them both dressed, Ray had her bookbag and Yami had hers, the two stopped by Miego’s studio to let him know that they were leaving.
As usual, they found him leaning over his mixing board, headphones on, and nodding his head to whatever he was listening to. Yami bit her lip because he was still only dressed in sweatpants, no shirt. The second he realized they were in there with him, he pulled the headphones off and addressed Ray.
“You leaving me, Ray? I thought you were chillin’ with me today.” He lifted her into his lap and kissed her face.
“Mommy said I have to go to school.” She pointed and looked up at Yami.
“You’ll see Miego later. You have to go to school like Mommy, Ray.”
Ray stuck her little lips out and pouted a little more, which made Miego laugh.
“Don't do that, Ray. Be a big girl and go to school, and I’ll have a surprise for you when you get home.”
“Okay.” Just like that, she was over it.
Yami rolled her eyes and shook her head.
Miego laughed and then shrugged.
“Let's go, Ray, we’re late.”
Ray slid off Miego’s lap after he kissed her cheek one last time and then walked over and grabbed her mot
her's hand. He stood and joined them, leaning down to kiss Yami before he whispered in her ear, “I’ll have a surprise for you too.” He kissed the side of her face and she blushed.
After walking them to the door, Miego locked up and headed back to the studio.
Yami grinned all the way down stairs until she hit the front door and heard Ray’s little voice.
“Daddy.” She yanked away from Yami.
Even after Yami tried to tighten her hold on her daughter’s hand, Ray ran to Black and jumped into his arms.
“Hey, baby girl. Daddy missed you.”
“I missed you too, Daddy. Are you taking us to school?” Ray asked.
He looked away from his daughter and right at Yami. “Yep, would you like that?”
“Yes.” Ray giggled. “Come on, Mommy.”
“No, Ray, Mommy’s going to drive us,” Yami said, looking at Ray and trying not to make eye contact with Black.
He laughed arrogantly and then looked at Yami with so much hate that it made her heart race. She gripped her phone and his eyes went right to it.
“Don't even think about it, that nigga already got you in enough trouble as it is. Get in the got damn car, Yamiah,” he said as he clenched his jaw.
She looked at him and then her daughter, knowing that shit was about to go tragically wrong before she moved slowly to his car and got in.
After he buckled Ray into her seat, Black moved into the driver’s seat and looked at her. “I told you to keep that nigga away from my daughter, didn't I? I swear you don't fucking listen, but I got something for that.”
He started the car and pulled away from the curb. Yami looked up at their building as her heart pounded harder in her chest. She didn't know what Black was about to do because he was so unpredictable, but she had a feeling that this might be the last time she ever saw her daughter, her building or Miego again. She knew that Black would never hurt Ray but when it came to her, there were no guarantees.
