“What…what are you doing here?” Janelle asked ignoring my question.

“The fuck you mean what am I doing here, and I asked you a damn question. Is she mine… is that my kid?” I was trying to stay calm but I could tell that I was almost yelling.

“This is not the place, can we-”

“You have got to be fucking kidding me. Is that why your ass disappeared, because you were pregnant with my kid? And you left, keeping that shit from me? The fuck Jay? What type of shit is that?”

I had taken a step towards her and our bodies were inches apart. Because of our height difference, I was looking down at her. I could tell that she was nervous but I didn’t give a fuck. This was some bullshit. I had a kid and didn’t know it.

“You didn’t want kids, so I just-”

“Don’t tell me what the fuck I wanted, and besides, I don’t think you asked me, did you?” I glanced at the table and became even more pissed, if that were actually possible. “This shit wasn’t about me wanting kids, this was about your bourgeois ass parents not wanting their precious daughter to have a kid with a fucking drug dealer. I can’t believe this shit; I can’t believe you.”

“So what, they wanted better for me. At least I had her. They wanted me to have an abortion, but I didn’t, I couldn’t.”

“I wished you would have killed my child. I swear on everything real, I would have fucked your ass up. I can’t fucking believe you.”

The more I looked at her and what was obviously my child, the more I could visualize wrapping my hands around her neck. Janelle had always been selfish, but this was beyond selfish; it was just fucked up. There was no other way to explain this situation. How could she keep my kid away from me?

“Well believe it! Yes, she’s yours and I didn’t tell you. I’m sorry for that, but that’s why I’m here. I couldn’t keep her from you anymore. It wasn’t fair-”

I laughed, because it was the only thing that I could do to keep me from putting my hands on her. “Fair? Oh, so now your ass wants to be fair? You kept my kid from me for what, two years? She’s about two right, and now you feel like doing the right thing? The right thing would have been to tell me from day one. You’re selfish as fuck Jay. I swear to God you’re selfish as fuck.”

“Well I’m here now, so deal with it. Do you want to meet her?” Janelle’s expression softened, and I could tell that she was trying to do whatever she could so that I would calm down. I looked over at my daughter, and then caught sight of Janelle’s parents and got pissed all over again.

“Not now, I can’t do this with you right now. Fuck, I can’t believe this shit. I need a minute,” I said and looked towards our table. Tay, Liyah and Kendrick were heading towards the front. They were talking and smiling, in their own little happy world, and all I could think about was how I was about to break Tay’s heart by telling her that I had a fucking kid. Even if I didn’t know about it, I knew it was going to break her heart and I just wasn’t ready to deal with that yet.

“When Keem, when are you going to want to see her? You’ve already missed two years,” Janelle said, pulling my attention back to her.

“Don’t do that. You don’t get to make me out to be the asshole. This shit is your fault, so we do this my way. What’s your number?” I pulled my phone out of my pocket. After I had it unlocked, she rattled off her number and I saved it in my phone. I watched my daughter laughing and playing for a few more seconds, before I focused on Janelle.

“I’ll call you. Don’t come looking for me, don’t come to my club and if I see you anywhere near Tasia, I will fuck you up, so play with it if you want to.” I turned to walk away and could hear Janelle behind me.

“Riley, your daughter’s name is Riley, Hakeem.” I kept moving. I didn’t even bother to look back at her. My mind was too heavy and I needed time to sort things out, because my life was about to drastically change.

“What’s wrong?” Tasia asked the second she laid eyes on me. If anyone could read me like a book, it was Tay. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to hide my mood from her, no matter how hard I tried, so I did the only thing that I could do and lied.

“It’s nothing, just got something I need to handle with Jodie, but don’t worry about that. I’m good.” I let my arm fall around her waist, while I pushed open the door with the other. The four of us walked out so that we could say our final goodbyes.

“It was good to finally meet you under better circumstances,” Kendrick said, extending a hand towards me. I shook it and laughed.

“I was having a bad day but yeah, me too,” I said referring to the first time we met. He was with Tay at Zen’s, and I didn’t know who he was, or why he was with her, so I was rude as fuck.

“It’s all good. I would have been the same way, probably worse,” Kendrick said, and then let out a light chuckle. I watched as he glanced at Liyah and then gently pulled her into his side. She seemed happy, genuinely happy, and it had been a minute since I could honestly say that she smiled as much as she had tonight.

“This was fun. We should do it again, and soon,” Tay said as she looked around at all of us.

“Yes, we should,” Liyah smiled and looked up at Kendrick.

“I’m game,” he said before he leaned down and kissed Liyah on the cheek. “Well, I’m about to get her home, I have early practice tomorrow. I appreciate the invite and like I said, I look forward to doing this again.”

Liyah moved away from Kendrick enough to step to me. She wrapped her arms around me and briefly laid her head on my chest. “Night Keem. Thank you,” she said and then looked up at me with a grin.

  “For what?” I asked.

She let me go with a smirk on her face but didn’t say anything.

I just laughed because I knew she was referring to the fact that I didn’t show my ass with Kendrick.

“Whatever, text me when you get home so I know you’re good,” I said. Tay and I stood there for a few more minutes, and watched as Kendrick and Liyah walked across the parking lot to his car, before we headed to my truck. Once we were on our way home, Tay glanced at me a few times but didn’t say anything. She spent most of her time doing something on her phone. I knew she wanted to say something, but for now she was quiet, which was good, because I was stuck on Janelle and my daughter. I kept seeing Riley’s little face in my head, and couldn’t even be happy about it because of the way I found out about her and of how severely it was about to affect my life.

  “I wish that you w
ould talk to me,” Tay said catching me off guard. We had been home for a few hours and I knew that I was being distant, but I couldn’t help it. Janelle and her bullshit had me all the way fucked up. No matter how hard I tried to let it go, I just couldn’t, but I also couldn’t find the words to tell Tasia about it either.

“I’m good Tay, stop stressing.” Our room was dark but I could feel her mood and see her face clearly in my head. I knew her just that well, and I knew that I couldn’t keep this up for long.

“You’re not, but it’s whatever.” She pulled away from me and turned her back, but I grabbed her around the waist and pulled her back towards me. She didn’t fight me on it, but her breathing was heavy and I could tell that she was angry.

I kissed her shoulder, the back of her neck and then her temple, which relaxed her just a little, but I could tell she still wasn’t feeling me. I lifted my body, positioned it on top of hers, wedging myself between her legs, and balancing my weight on my forearms.

“You love me?” I asked, before I started planting kisses all over her face.

“You already know the answer to the question Keem.”

I chuckled, “Maybe I need to hear you say it.”

“I love you, now what’s wrong?” she asked.

“Nothing’s wrong, I just needed to hear it.” I covered my mouth with hers before she had a chance to say anything else, and when I released our kiss, I lifted my body and helped her out of her clothes. My shorts and boxers followed and I went right in. I knew it wasn’t going to fix anything or change anything, but I needed that connection with her. A part of me felt like I was about to lose it, while another part of me felt like nothing could break it. Either way, I needed Tay to feel me, all of me.

I started kissing her neck, moving down her chest, focusing on her breaks, but only for a minute before I made my way to her stomach, sliding my arms and shoulders under her legs until I could reach her center. When my tongue grazed her clit, she let out a muffled moan, like she was trying to control her reaction. That only made me work harder so that she couldn’t, and apparently it was working because she opened her legs wider, causing them to slide off my shoulders and seconds later, her body went limp and I could hear her breathing pick up.

That was all I needed. I smiled to myself at a job well done, before I scaled her body until I could reach her neck again. I was so hard that it almost hurt, so I let the head touch her center causing her body to shiver. She tried to force me insider of her, by molding her hands to my back to bring my body closer to her, and that made me instantly thrust myself inside her. I had to pause for a minute to control what I was feeling, but that only lasted for a minute before I was able to put in work. With slow steady strokes, I got lost in the feeling. Tasia did that to me. It was similar to an out of body experience, but trust me when I say I felt every damn stroke. I just closed my eyes and just let it happen.

“What’s good Mona, I haven’t seen you in a minute,” I said as soon as I stepped in Jodie’s apartment. I needed to talk to somebody about this situation with Janelle, and Jodie was the only one I trusted with my secrets.

“I know, you look good, papi.” Mona wrapped her arms around my neck and I pulled her into a hug.

“What I tell you about that papi shit, Mona? He isn’t your damn papi. You’re gonna make me fuck you up over some dumb shit.”

“Kiss my ass, Jodie. I call him what I want and you can’t do shit about it,” Mona said in her thick Spanish accent, her hand on her hip, while she peered at Jodie.

“Why are you still here anyway? Angel is good, you can take your ass on.”

Mona rolled her eyes at Jodie, walked over to the sofa and sat down. She held her hand in the air mumbling something in Spanish, but the only thing I picked up was the word stupid before she shot Jodie a bird. A few minutes later Mona was on his sofa, had picked up the remote and began channel surfing. I just laughed. Those two were gonna end up killing each other one day.

“She’s gonna make me strangle her dumb ass, I swear,” Jodie said when I walked into the kitchen where he was leaning against the counter.

“Man, don’t say that shit, because you know you don't mean it. You love that girl. Shit, if you didn't you would have left her ass a long time ago, but here she is,” I said with my back to Jodie, because I had his refrigerator door open looking for a beer, which I knew he had. Once I had two Heinekens in my hand, I closed the door and sat down at the table, opened one and turned it up.

“What’s up yo, you good? I wasn’t expecting to see you anytime soon,” Jodie asked, now focused on me.

“I just needed to holla at you about something real quick,” I said before I turned my beer up again, damn near finishing it.

“I’m listening,” Jodie said now looking concerned.

“I glanced towards his living room and Mona was deep into something she was watching on TV.

“I have a kid,” I said and then waited for Jodie to respond.

He raised his eyebrows slightly before he spoke. “You have a kid or you’re about to have a kid?”

  “I have one, she’s two. It’s-”

“Is that why she brought her ass back?” Jodie asked, cutting me off. “Don’t trust that shit Keem, you know Janelle is on some bullshit.”

  “She’s mine Jodie… I saw her and she’s mine.”

  “Does Tay know?”

“Not yet, but I have to tell her, fuck.” I lifted my hand and let it run over my head and then down my face.

“So that bitch got pregnant, left for almost three years, and then pops up with a hey, here’s your kid? That’s some foul shit Keem.”

“Trust me, I know. Hell, the fucked up part about it, is that she didn’t even tell me. She was at the same restaurant with her parents and I just happened to see her. When I saw the kid I knew she was mine, I could just look at her and tell. When I asked Jay, she went to stuttering and shit. I could have slapped her ass, on the real.”

  “So what did you do?”

“I just left. I got her number, told her I would call her and that she better stay the fuck away from Tay, and I left. I couldn’t deal with that shit. Tay and Liyah were with me and that wasn’t the time.”

“You know you have to tell her. Damn yo, she is gonna be all kinds of fucked up over this. I never saw that shit coming.” Jodie looked like I felt.

“Fuck, me either. You think I want a kid with anybody but Tay? Hell no, but apparently that’s a done deal.”

“Well you better start dealing with it, Keem. If that’s really your kid-”

“I know, trust me, I know. You know me, if she’s mine then I’m there. Hell, I already missed two years. That shit pisses me off. I didn’t get a say in it. You know how I feel about family yo, and for Jay to keep her from me, that’s some bullshit.”

We both sat there, silently processing the situation, before Jodie laughed.

“The fuck you laughing for?” I asked.

“I hope she look like you, nigga, and not Janelle’s bird ass,” Jodie said with a big ass grin.

I just looked at him and shook my head before I laughed too. Jodie hated Janelle so I knew he would eventually have some foul shit to say. He wouldn’t be Jodie if he didn’t.

“You're dumb as fuck yo. I’m sitting here being serious and you’re joking and shit,” I said.

“It was funny though and you know it, that’s why your ass laughed,” Jodie said. “But seriously though, if that’s your kid, do what you need to do for her and fuck Janelle. Don’t let her mess up what you have with Tay. Real talk Keem.”

Again, my hand went over my head. “I’m not. It’s just a fucked up situation. I already put her through it with that Sky shit, so I know she’s not going to be trying to hear that I have a kid. Hell, even if it was before her, the consequences are here now and I know it’s gonna hit her hard.”

“She’ll be alright. It might take a minute, but she’ll eventually deal with it. Just don't fuck up again.”r />
“Hell, you don’t have to worry about that. I don’t care how much ass is being thrown my way, none of that shit is worth losing Tay. I mean that. I had my moment, but real talk, I’m not risking that shit again. I’m just glad she didn’t leave me, ‘cause I don’t know what I would do without her.”

“You hear that Jodie, that’s a real man,” Mona said, as she stood in the entrance to the kitchen peering at Jodie.

“Man, chill with that shit. I’m a real man, your ass just aggravating as fuck. You stop stressing me the fuck out all the time and maybe you could get that too,” Jodie said.

“I stress you out, estupido, you’re the one screwing all these bitch out here. Got me looking dumb and my hair falling out worrying about you. I should have listened to him years ago when he told me you weren’t shit, but no, I had to fall for your creepy ass eyes and now look at me. Stuck right in the middle of some bullshit.”

“It didn’t have shit to do with my eyes and you know it.”

Jodie ignored almost everything Mona said expect what she said about me. He turned to me and pointed, “You told her I wasn’t shit?”

“Hell yeah nigga, because you weren’t and you know it,” I said and laughed.

“Damn Keem, that’s fucked up. You were supposed to be with me on this shit,” Jodie said, mugging me hard as hell.

“Fuck that. She asked, I told her the truth. That was high school nigga, get over it.” I was still laughing.

“Yeah, high school Jodie, and you still haven’t changed,” Mona said, and then walked out the kitchen.

“You want me to change then grow the fuck up and stop being so damn aggravating,” Jodie yelled after her.

“Fuck you Jodie!” she yelled back.

“Why you do her like that? You know your ass isn’t gonna ever leave her alone, so stop fucking around and just make that shit work,” I said.

“She gets on my damn nerves, that’s why. I can’t breathe without her trying to finish my damn breath for me. I can’t do that shit.”
