She Fell For A Boss: An Urban Love Tale Page 5

He watched as they laughed about something, admiring how beautiful her smile was. She had a natural beauty about her, nothing over the top. In fact, he guessed that most guys probably overlooked her because she wasn't your typical bad ass, by society’s standards. She was short as hell, small frame, small breasts, and no real curves. She wasn't bony, but she wasn't thick either.

“Yo, you know her like that?” Miego asked the second his sister yanked open his door to get in.

She dropped her book bag on the floor and pulled her purse off her arm before she retrieved her phone from her pocket and unlocked her screen.

  “Who, Yami?”

  “Yeah, you cool with her?”

“We’re alright, why? I know you not trying to kick it to Yami. You know who she fucks with, right?” Yanna looked at her brother like he was crazy. She knew her brother wasn't to be messed with, and he was reckless as hell, but she also knew Black was just as bad. The two of them were pretty much the same, well as far as she knew. With Black, she had only heard rumors, but with her brother she’d had a front row seat to his insanity on more than one occasion.

“Who?” Miego asked, now curious as he glanced at Yami, who was still standing in front of the student union building on the phone.

“Black. They have a daughter, so that’s not any type of drama you need.” Yanna eyed her brother, hoping that he wasn't about to get caught up in a beef over a female.

It wasn't like he had issues getting women. In fact, he had enough after him that Yami shouldn't have even been a thought for him. But she also knew her brother, and she could tell from the smirk he was wearing that his mind was already made up.

“Black, huh? Fuck that nigga. I’ll be right back.”

Miego knew exactly who Black was. He didn't know him personally, but he’d heard a little about him to know that he so called ran shit in his area, the same way Miego ran shit in his. They were in rival gangs, but Miego didn't really fuck with anything gang related anymore. Once you were in, you were always in, but he hadn’t actively been involved since his teens.

Miego pulled the handle to get out while Yanna shook her head, knowing that it was pointless for her to even voice her opinion about what she knew her brother was about to do.

“You need a ride?” Miego stopped under the awning and shoved his hands into the pockets of his sweatpants while he waited for Yami to answer.

He didn't give a fuck who she was talking to, even after he noticed the frustrated look on her face when their eyes met, but she kept talking to her caller.

“Nobody, damn. They’re not even talking to me. What I gotta lie for, Black? Yaz is on her way to come get me. No, don't do that, I told you Yaz is on her way, and she has Rayah anyway, so I’ll just have her drop me off at your place. I told you—”

The way Yami looked at her phone and then sucked her teeth, Miego assumed that Black had hung up on her. Miego had been waiting patiently for her to finish her conversion, but her reaction to the call struck a nerve with him. He hated the way she was lying to Black about the fact that he asked her if she needed a ride.

Even though he didn't know Black personally, the streets talked, so he knew enough about of him to know that somebody like Yami had no business messing with him. The two had even unintentionally kicked it with some of the same women, one of whom was Kia, so Miego knew that Black was controlling and liked to use his hands to do it. According to Kia, that was why she stopped fucking with him.

It was kind of funny to Miego how he had never come across Yami before, and although he had no connection to her whatsoever, the idea of Black treating her that way had him wanting to protect her.

“So you fuck with Black, huh?”

Yami’s face scrunched up and she rolled her eyes. “Used to.”

“That shit right there didn't sound past tense to me, baby girl.”

Again, her cute little face scrunched up. “We have a daughter, so I have to deal with him, but I’m not with him.”

Miego laughed. “So that’s why she brown skinned. Because of that nigga.”

“Umm, my sister is on her way, so is there a point to this?”

“Why you so damn hateful all the time, shorty?”

“Why you so damn rude all the time?”

“I’m not rude, ma. I just say what’s on my mind, and I told you before, I apologize if you take what I say the wrong way.”

“Yeah, well, I have to go.”

  “Is your sister here?”

  “No.”

“Then your little ass don't have to go, not yet anyway. You scared of me or something?”

“No, why would I be scared of you?”

“’Cause you always trying to run every time you're around me. You can't give me five minutes of your time, beautiful?”

“For what? I already told you I’m not looking for anything.”

“And I already told your stubborn ass, you’ve been found, so whether you were looking or not is irrelevant.” Miego stepped closer to Yami so that he was physically touching her body with his, but he kept his hands in his pockets.

She looked up at him, trying to maintain her hard exterior, but couldn't help but smile because his presence was alluring and he smelled so damn good.

“You obviously don't understand what personal space is,” she said, not really wanting him to move, but she also didn't want to give the impression that she was okay with him being that close to her without permission.

“Trust me, ma. I understand personal space, but I also want to be as close to you as possible while I can because I know you’ll jet on me, and it might be another two weeks before I see you again. I have to take what I can get from your stubborn ass.”

A grin formed on Miego's face, which forced one onto Yami's.

“Ahh, shit. I actually got your ass to smile. Now how about you make me smile by giving me your number, and I’ll get out of your personal space. For now.”

“I can't do that.” She needed this man to move away from her and fast. He was breaking her down with every second that he was in her presence

“Why not? You said you’re single, right?”

“It's not that. I am, but it's still complicated.”

Miego's brow furrowed. “You might be scared of that nigga, but I’m not, so if YOU don't want to fuck with me that’s one thing. But if you do, and you're afraid of how he’s gon’ react, that’s another.”

“I’m not scared of him. I just don't need the unnecessary drama.”

Miego watched as she looked away. He could see it in her body language. She was scared of Black, and that pissed him off and made him want her even more, just so that he never had to see her react that way again.

“Then give me your number. Let me deal with the drama for you. I got you, ma. I promise you that.”

She glanced at him for a second and then looked away like she was thinking about it, but then a car pulled up behind his and she spoke.

“I don't think so. There’s my sister. I guess I’ll see you around.”

She adjusted her purse on her shoulder and was about to step around him because their bodies were still touching, but Miego reached for her face and lifted her chin with his finger.

“Look, you don't know me, but believe me when I say I got you, Yami. Give me your number, and I promise I got you.”

She glanced at the car and could see the scowl on her sister’s face at the sight of Miego standing there in front of her. Everything in her was screaming no, but for some reason, she knew she had to.

“Give me your phone.” She frowned and held her hand out while Miego smiled and obliged.

He reached into his pocket, grabbed his phone, and unlocked it before giving it to her. She saved her number and then handed it back to him.

“I’m not going to promise you that I’ll answer, but you have it.” She shrugged and then stepped around him.

Miego smiled because he knew she would answer. Maybe not at first, but eventually. He walked behind her
as she made her way to her sister’s car, and headed to his. Just before he got in, he looked back at her and spoke one last time.

  “Well talk soon, Yami.”

She just shook her head and got in with her sister while Miego got in the driver side of his car.

Yanna was glaring at him, but she didn't say a word.

“Yo, chill with all that. I’m grown, and I don't give a fuck about another nigga. I don't care who he is.”

“I don't care about him either, but I do care about you. I don't want anything to happen to you because you're chasing some female.”

“I don't chase females, Yanna, and trust, I’m good. I don't do shit unless I’m prepared to deal the consequences. So, like I said, fuck Black.”

Miego meant exactly what he said. He had plans for Yami, and if Black had to be dealt with because of them, then fuck it. He didn't care. She clearly had moved on, so if that nigga couldn't accept that and was on some bitch shit, then Miego would handle it.

“What's good, fam?” Train dapped Miego after opening the door to let him in.

“Shit, just chillin’, so I figured I’d roll through and check you out.”

“That's cool, I ain't into nothing right now.”

Miego followed Train through his living room until they reached one of the bedrooms that Train had turned into his entertainment room. He had a 52-inch TV on three of the four walls, leather sofas and recliners, a bar, and every game system that you could think of. Train sat down on one of the sofas and tossed Miego a game controller.

Miego sat on the opposite end and waited for Train to fire up the game. He already knew it would be NBA 2K because Train played it religiously, and the two of them had often battled on it throughout the years of their friendship.

“So, I talked to my man out in Virginia, and he said he can move the product with no problem. With the amount we’re selling to him and my guy down in South Carolina, you should be set in about six months. I mean, since your ass keeps singing that ‘I’m done,’ shit. I’ll believe it when I see it, but for now, I’ll play along.” Train laughed a little before looking Miego in his eyes. “You still want in?” Train asked, not breaking eye contact.

Miego laughed at the fact that Train didn't believe him when he said he was done. Hell, he didn't believe it his damn self, but for now, that was the plan. “Shit, yeah. I need to make this bread real quick so I can figure out my next move.”

“You thought any more about fucking with those tracks and shit?”

“Yeah, I’ve been playing around with it. I can buy the equipment pretty cheap, and then all I have to do is rent a space. Low maintenance, and I don't have to account for any income. Right now, that’s what I need. I ain't never had a damn legal source of income, so if I take my black ass out somewhere trying to buy a business and shit, the Feds will lock me up before the ink is dry on the contract.”

Train laughed. “You ain't never lied. That’s why I’m sticking to this shit. They don't need to tell me twice. I’ll just keep stacking money until I got enough to survive and then I’m out. I give it a few more years.”

“I'm not fucking with it. I promise you on everything, prison ain't the move, bruh,” Miego said, remembering the time he spent.

His respect had carried over, so nobody really fucked with him, but the time and solitude were what got to him the most. He couldn’t do shit but sit around all day thinking, thinking about what he had done to get there, about what he could be doing, and what he wanted to be doing. That shit fucked with his mental and it was hard. Miego wouldn't wish that on anybody, and he damn sure wasn't about to suffer through it again.

“Shit, you know I know. Don't forget, I was in that damn cage for two fucking years of Fed time, which meant that I had to do all that shit. That’s why I’m doing this. Fuck them street sales. I want the big deals and the big money. I don't wanna go back no more than you do, but I feel you, though. Just make sure you hook me up with some hot shit when you get your equipment up and running.”

“Man, fuck you. I’m not wasting my time.” Miego laughed about the fact that Train kept pressing him for a beat.

“Damn, it's like that? I thought I was your man and shit. You can’t hook me up with one damn track?”

“Yeah, nigga, I got you. You ain't gon’ do shit with it, but I got you.”

“Just watch, I’m ’bout to be on some Jay-Z, type shit, talking ’bout coming up out this hustle game.”

Miego chuckled but stayed focused on the game. “Yeah, i’ight. I feel you, but check it, what do you know about Black?”

Train paused the game, dropped the controller in his lap, and looked right at Miego.

“The fuck you mean ‘what I know about Black?’ I know what you know. He’s bad news and a problem we don't need.”

“You bitchin’ up on me, Train?” Miego dropped his controller and narrowed his eyes at his boy.

“Fuck no. Don’t no man put fear in my heart and you know that. But I’m trying to make money and not start a damn war. That muthafucka is crazy as fuck from what I hear. I never had a run in with him, but I heard shit about him. In fact, if what they say is true, he reminds me of your reckless ass, just doing shit and not worrying about the consequences. So what I do know is if he’s coming for you, the only way to stop that muthafucka is to kill his ass.”

Miego looked Train right in the eyes. “It is what it is, then.”

“Yo ass just got home. You got beef with him or something? If so, how the fuck that happen?”

Miego laughed, more to himself, though, as he thought about Yami. “Not yet, but I’m about to.”

Train stared at Miego, waiting for the rest. “Yami,” was all Miego said.

“Ah hell, you fucking Black’s girl? Damn, Miego. You know how that shit goes, and not just his girl, they got a kid, yo. You know niggas be flipping the fuck out over their baby mamas and shit.”

“Yeah, like your ass gets with Lisa.”

“Shit, I got the right. We’re still together, and she better not be fucking around with another nigga. I’ll mess her up, and I put that on everything.”

Train looked pissed just thinking about it, which made Miego laugh.

“You’re together, but you fucking everything moving, and she can't even look at another muthafucker without you trying to jack her ass up.”

“You damn straight. She knew what it was the second she had my son.”

“Your ass needs some damn help, bruh.”

“Nah, nigga. Your ass needs some damn help for starting this shit you ’bout to be stuck in the middle of.”

“Shorty said they’re not together, so it’s all good. That nigga don't own her just because they got a kid, bruh. You know me. It is what it is. He wanna come for me, let him. He just better come correct.”

“I swear your ass ain't been home but a hot ass minute, and you already got me stuck in the middle of some bullshit,” Train said and laughed.

“I ain't asking you for shit.”

“But you know your battles are my battles. Fuck, that shit don’t change, so if you got beef with Black, then I got beef with Black.”

“You know I appreciate that, but I’m also not gon’ ask you to put this shit on you.”

“The fuck, Miego? You ain't gotta ask. I know you heard what the fuck I just said.”

Train held his hand up and Miego met it with his. That was that, whatever happened from here, they were in it together.

“Now start the damn game so I can whoop your ass. I know you think you been running shit since I been gone,” Miego said with a smirk.

“Man, fuck you. It ain't nothing.”

Train started the game again and the two friends settled in, talking trash and just chillin’. Whatever problems were coming would be dealt with, but for now, they were just in the moment.

  Chapter Four

“Mommy, I see Daddy!” Rayah yelled from the back seat as she pointed out the window at Black, who was leaning ag
ainst his truck with a few of his crew.

Yami wished that she could be just as excited as her daughter, but she knew it was about to be some bullshit. It was crazy to her how she was so tough with everyone except Black. Being small all her life had given her a feisty firecracker attitude. She had fought guys and girls damn near three times her size without an ounce of fear in her heart and had come out on the winning side, but with Black, it was different. He broke her down in ways that she didn’t even understand.

“You want me to stay?” Yaz looked at her sister for a brief second before she looked over at Black. He winked at Yaz and she rolled her eyes.

“Nah, I’m good. We’re good right now, and he just wants to see Ray. I’ll call you later when I get back to Mommy’s house.”

Yaz looked at her sister for a second before she nodded. She knew that Yami and Black weren't always fighting, especially when Ray was around, but she also knew that Black was a little bipolar. It didn't take much to set him off.

“I’ight, if that nigga starts tripping, call me, and I’ll come get you.”

Yami laughed at her sister because she knew she was serious. She would fight Black if she had to, and Yami loved her for that.

“Girl, bye.” Yami laughed and got out.

She grabbed her book bag and purse before she opened the door of the back seat to get Rayah out. She held Rayah’s hand as she waved at her sister, who watched the two of them walk over to Black before she pulled away from the curb.

“Daddy, do you have a surprise for me?” Rayah asked, snatching away from Yami and running up to him.

She held her arms up, and like always, he lifted her from the ground and held her against his chest before kissing both of her cheeks. A smile spread across his face as he looked at her.

“Why you always asking me for stuff, shorty?” Black teased his daughter.
